A couple of weeks ago, my friend Melisa introduced me to “Milk + Bookies,” a very special organization that donates books to children in need.  Milk + Bookies gives books to kids through private donations and fundraising events.  To me, books are everything.  As a child I loved visiting the bookmobile, a truck owned by the library, packed to the brim with books.  For as long as I can remember, I have stayed up late reading.  In my younger years it was “The Babysitter’s Club,” anything by Beverly Cleary, Roald Dahl or Judy Blume.  I watched my mom plow through books voraciously and I followed suit.  I hope to instill this love in my son as well.  So far, so good…

Our nighttime story time routine starts with my son standing in his crib, bopping eagerly as I choose the books.  I take a seat in the pistachio colored rocking chair beside him and read our first book.  He carefully examines the pictures and turns the pages, sometimes turning back to the front cover to remind us of what we’re reading.  After we finish, he grabs the book and gets to work rereading it on his own.  Here he is doing just that.  He loves to read in his crib and I am absolutely overjoyed!

A nightly ritual: cover to cover!

Reading in the diner.  And the car.  And the store.  And just about anywhere!

*Studies have shown that a strong relationship exists between the amount of print media such as books, newspapers and magazines found in a household and literacy rates of the children that live in them.  So, introduce the printed word early on, keep your house full of reading materials and watch out for a passionate reader!*

we love brown bear too! and then at the end she likes to point to the animals as I call them out in funny voices. omg. she picks up her books and starts to yell “ah! ah! booh! booh!” when we go anywhere I don’t have to worry so much about having toys but I bring at least three books to entertain her. :) these photo of the little man are so sweet. I love them.
